Mycobacteria are aerobic, nonsporeforming,nonmotile, facultative, intracellular ,curved rods measuring 0.2-0.5um.Their cell wall contain mycolic acid rich long chain glycolipid and phospholipoglycans.(Mycocoids) that protect mycobacteria from cell lysosomal attack and also retain red basic fuchsin dye after acid rinsing.
